It is with a great deal of regret and disappointment that we have decided to end the 54 year run of the Smith Mountain Lake Annual Fishing Tournament (formerly the Optimist Tournament). A lot has changed in 54 years. Instead of a couple of tournaments there are now fishing tournaments weekly all over the lake. The focus has changed from fathers and grandfathers teaching their kids and grandkids how to fish and is now focused on how much money is being paid out. With dwindling numbers, we could no longer afford the big payouts.

My biggest disappointment is letting down the Smith Mountain Lake Crusaders. This is one the best youth organizations I've ever seen. Please take the time to follow them...and please consider supporting them financially.
